I know it’s been a bit since the last written review…but here I am, in the text!!! At least I’m back with something big…I do have to ask while I have your attention, what are your thoughts on the youtube vids? Anyway…First I saw Apollyon…I passed…(It was Xtransbots anyway), THEN DX-9 had Mightron, but I held fast…finally Maketoys had Despotron, and I tell you my finger was on the “buy” button and that SAME day the first pictures of this guy came out. So was it worth it? Read on!
Hey there you sexy sassy lord of destruction…yeah baby you bring that peace through tyranny…*ahem* sorry…in a word, YES. Review over, I’m back to youtube…no no no…Let’s go to alt mode first…
Oh my gosh…this mode…Transformation is one of the most intimidating ordeals I have endured…and I still didn’t get the barrel straight. I highly recommend going to my buddy TMAN978’s youtube and go to the 20 minute point. It was the only way I could do this I swear, but it looks fantastic. I should point out that this will also be the only time I transform this. Also…Do NOT take this out transformed to a 7-11…you will make headlines, and not in the way that will do the hobby proud.
In this mode we have a number of features, and the fact the Takara designers could get them in is a feat. Also this is SOLID. The handle was just badass to hold. Now there is a sound feature in the scope, but no light up. I’ll be frank I will never use it, especially because all the voice work is the Japanese guy, not Frank Welker.
Finally yes, there is the stock and silencer. It is HUGE assembled and I stalked my wife around the house. Alas I did not dare put the silencer on tight due to the paint scraping. Also I did get mine from BBTS and so that means it had these orange plugs in the pistol and silencer barrels. Click here and you can see how I removed them. Plus you get to see my awesome little girl.
Ok, back to the sexy beast. He is just painted all over, which is double edged because that is prone to scraping. The torso though, is sculpted and painted as well with the electronics. Now with the scope/fusion cannon, you can retract the barrel for a more cartoon accurate look, and I do have pictures with it in both stages. I admit I like it more toy accurate, but that is me. Anyway…
He can totally pull an Agito with his face! Yup, the face is removable and underneath you get that haunting image from Transformers The Movie when he was being reformatted. We have his stern face, taunting laughter, angry, and battle damaged (again spread through the review). It is also the easiest face switch I have done with a figure.
Articulation is also pretty damn well. Megatron also has one of the best skirt designs I have seen in a figure. Aside from the hands and not the deepest of ankle tilts there is nothing to complain about…I mean you even get an ab crunch which is pretty badass.
As Takara is wont to do, we get a few “from that one episode” accessories. Of all of them…this is the most silly, yet got a ton of love for the detail. This was from the time the cons made robot duplicates and would control them with the helmet, cool, but back in the box it goes…
Next we have the Key to Vector Sigma. Great when the MP scaled Stunticons come out (one or two third parties are working on that I believe) and a fun piece that can be used by a few figures.
Now we get to the stuff from the movie! We have the laser sword…
With effect blade! A nice touch I have to say.
What is cool is that it is compatible with the laser pistol as well. Because while Prime could take a Fusion cannon blast, pistols were his one weakness…
Speaking of the movie, we also get a battle damaged chest to go with the battle damaged face. This I think is awesome. The switch out on the chest is pretty simple to do as well.
Now the most iconic “from that episode” bit with Megatron is the mace. I was a bit let down you had to remove the fist, but hey, it looks good on him. It comes with the chain, but Takara did one better.
They also gave us this stiff jointed alternative chain that can hold it’s shape in midair. This has to be one of the best interpretations I have seen of this weapon.
Oh and that scope and stock? We aren’t done with them yet! They can combine to form the big cannon like the g1 toy could…but that’s not all!
Megatron can do…well..umm…this…ok apparently this was done with the original toy in Japan when it was a Mircoman toy. Ummm…it’s a thing…
More importantly though, the stock ALSO becomes a display stand, and this by far is the greatest extra I have seen in a long time, and this is what made me pre-order Megatron.
So unlike some figures, Takara Megatron did not fail me…this is the icon, this is the big bad guy..this…still is the roughest figure I have ever transformed in my entire life…but WORTH IT. I got mine from Big Bad Toy Store, but to be honest I may be checking out Amazon.JP next time. If you can find him, get him. Takara, you get the solid A+ on this.
