Cue up the electric guitar…When this guy is in hand, the theme of Beast Wars will just echo in your head…The show that pretty much changed the game in fandom, is finally getting it’s due in MP form! I remember the announcement about getting an MP Primal and have been waiting with the utmost patience…so let us see if it has paid off!
This is the guy that started the whole Trukk not Munkey debates…and having him in hand is pretty damn cool. This…is a plastic gorilla! Silver back to be exact.
He can go on all fours with a light adjustment of his hips but when you do, you get to see some robot kibble. There is the major hit on this guy…I failed to take the shot, but from the back you do get a bunch of robot kibble on the back of his legs. I understand why, and how…but this is still a Masterpiece figure…so a let down.
Articulation in this mode though is rather impressive. Neck is on a ball joint, wrist swivels, even ankle tilts. I am not a fan of the elbows though. Just that severe joint kind of irks me for a figure on this level.
Hey look, it’s an AGITO Impression! (sorry, old review joke…) But yes the face does come off, and while we have this shot, again, there is some visible Robot bits..
We have 3 face choices. Stoic, grinning and angry. He comes default with stoic, but I switched it out to angry for a bit of personality.
Over all, the Beast mode is pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. I give this a B+ mostly because of the visible robot kibble from the back and under the shoulder plates…but this IS a transformer…so let’s just MAXIMIZE this review!
Ok I was hold that back I admit…but let us look at this robot mode! Here we have some fun…and my first minor let down…the knees…those spheres don’t cover them properly when bent. A minor quibble, but still the knees on the original mold kind of looked better, come to think of it so did the elbows…but let us look at the positives. Those lower legs look great. I love the piston feet, and we do have that ankle tilt. He also has a waist swivel in this mode. The arms have a butter fly joint for transformation…but alas ever really get utilized for posing.
Primal also comes with 3 additional faces. Smiling, shouting and the face plate. I had trouble getting the face off, so sticking with the default for now. I may attempt to switch it to the battle plate…but Primal is more known to have a mouth.
In a more vanilla pose, the legs look much more solid I have to say. The chest is nicely detailed, though it could have had a bit more red on it. Here you can see you can also deploy the Prime guns. Much more sci fi looking than the original, so I have to give him that.
Now one big thing he does have that the original failed on are these gorgeous wrist guns.
These deploy smoothly, and hide away perfectly. These look pretty baddass.
He also comes with a pair of these beautiful swords. These are really well painted, a nice gauge of plastic, not feeling cheap at all. I love the gold on the hilt.
These store oh his back in robot mode, and here is were I have my (hopefully) final complaint. In the original toy you could pretty much have all the weapons stored in beast mode. It was a solid package, here you do have to set the parts aside. I know I sound like I am nitpick, but again this is an MP figure! It is held on a higher standard.
Ok, back to good things. Wielding the swords, yeah, Primal looks ready for battle…
When you have all the guns out as well, damn, he is ready to wade into some Preds and send them to the CR chambers! This does help justify the price for admission.
Finally I have to mention he has the jet pack! This is the kind of love I like from MPs, so solid point in good favor. And wait, what is that hole?
We have a stand port ladies and gentlemen! So if you do want the in the air poses, he can achieve it! Provide your stand doesn’t topple from the weight…yeah I need some of them Takara stands I think…
So in the end I am slightly torn. This is a good figure. I can say that. This is a pricey figure as well, and that is my (really I mean it) final issue. I think he was about $25-$35 more than he should have been. I’m sorry…for the price we are paying we should have gotten more. Plus they ended up re-releasing a premium version after this! I don’t regret having him, I really like Primal! I don’t mean to sound negative, but with the MP name, I expect a Masterpiece quality figure. It is almost there, but I have to say unless a die hard, have to have it now kind of fan, wait for a sale or if someone is selling it off to get the premium version. It actually kills me to score this, but I’m giving MP Primal a B+…and that is a crime.
