Hey all, I guess I should warn you that the title card has spoilers…you know, that Astrotrain turns into a train…and a spaceship…sorry…I know…ok actually no I’m not, that card looks sweet and you know it! Now before we hit the jump, there is a HUGE disclaimer I need to put out. I totally touched up this figure cosmetically. Hit not only the panel lining, but also broke out the silver sharpie. There is detailing on here that if you like, you are just going to have to knuckle down and do it yourself. I will say totally worth it…so that being said…
We are going to start with the Astro mode. This is a badass space ship. Here you can see where not only I panel lined every groove…but hit the silver sharpie on the “windows.” Yes this should have been done, but such is life. Aside from the details I have one major complaint, and that is no standport on the under side. Aside from that this mode is gorgeous. They hit the colors just right. The Decepticon symbols are on the wings. You can see there are various ports for the weapons though they are rather loose in the side ports.
He also has integrated landing hear and virtually no kibble which is quite impressive. Now one issue I have with the altmodes is scale. This would be a massive space cruiser, and even more so when we get to the next mode. Yeah Mass Shifting, I know, but I mean this is thing is on Metroplex scale here…anyway…
Train mode is also pretty sweet. This is actually like some kind of rolling fortress/battleship on land. Again, all that silver you see was added by hand.
The sheer amount of molded detail on this mode, it was a crime not to highlight it! I really like how the weapons are integrated, but again there are few ports to pick. The cannons are hard molded, but man it would be awesome if they could rotate. This mode reminds me of Energon Omega Supreme actually. Where again I have to throw the scale flag. This alt mode would be freaking MASSIVE…it would also be damn awesome, unless the target of attack wasn’t near the rail road tracks. But still, looks damn cool.
Oh yeah, hatch for titan master…blah blah, needs paint, blah blah…I don’t hate the gimmick, but it is getting redundant lol.
and speaking of cool, WOW, I LOVE the robot mode! It isn’t perfect by far, but it is near close.
Like Alpha Trion he had the pylons that pop out, but honestly that is to just add to the silhouette to make it like the g1 toy. I love it even has coloring to simulate the old wheels. Now me, I miss the wings on the chest, but this looks much more in line with the old animation model. He had two guns, one being the one for a titan master to sit in, the other is sort of like the g1 one gun…but no where near as large. One serious cosmetic gripe though, no visible Decipticon brand in this mode. I need to find an extra sticker and put in on his leg.
Articulation is alright. No ankle tilt, no waist swivel, no wrist swivels…but he can take a heroic stance pose as well as pass the one leg test.
Now if you have been also collecting the individual Titan Masters, I can say both Crashbash and Apeface look fantastic on this body. Crashbash almost gives him a Starscream like appeal and Apeface a more serious but generic character feel.
Over all I really like Astrotrain. When I saw Sentinel Prime at the store I held out because I knew this HAD to be coming, and I am glad I was patient. Despite lack of stand port in altmode and having to detail him, this is a really solid figure. The modes work, he hits the nostalgia chord just right…and frankly I had fun with the pens. I give Astrotrain here an A-. Now just need to get the updated Octane and Blitzwing!
