Welcome back true believers! On day I’ll come up with a sweet catch phrase…but today is NOT that day! Instead we have a new historic figure for us…the first mainstream release of Alpha Trion! While yes he has appeared to us before in figure form, they were convention exclusives. This is pretty boss of Hasbro to do this, it almost makes me wonder if I’ll finally get my Devcon figure after all these years…only time will tell…So, let us see if the sage of the Autobots can finally hang with the figure crowd!
So totally breaking the norm, we are starting in robot mode. This is a bulky fellow here let me tell you. The colors flow quite nice and he has the whole armored knight feel but no Autobrand? Really?
He has a neat gimmick where these pylons pop up. As opposed to Astrotrain or Sentinel Prime, these actually add to the mass of the head. They did a great job matching the colors so it just kind of looks like a big head. It is on a swivel, so you still can turn the head, as opposed to Galvatron.
You can of course use other Titan Masters but…well all because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should.
Accessories are the fantastic sword and the triple barreled blaster.
Which of course seats a Titan Master quite nicely.
I’ll be straight up, articulation is not the strong point of this figure. Yes the shoulders arms and knees are good. We are lacking waist swivel, ankle pivots and wrist swivels though. So he is not that dynamic I have to say and one of the hips is kind of loose. I looked at it and it was grooved as if it was going to be ratcheted, but is loose, so hopefully some floor polish will work.
Though he DOES pass the one legged standing test.
Finally to add to the fun we have our display stand port in the back!
I should add when messing around with Alpha, I did this alternate transformation. I kind of like it because it is a bit less bulky and the shoulder gun adds some dimension.
Transformation time! HE turns into a pretty sweet space cruiser. This is kind of a throwback to Vector Prime, which is awesome for me because I loved Galaxy Force. Still though, no Autobrand.
The manned turret works a bit better like this, but I have to say the scale fan boy in me is kind of screaming.
The Titan Master rides in the translucent lion head shaped spot. He is rather generic, no paint, but is made of 3 colors of plastic.
Now the real crime is that the standport is on the topside. You can kind of finagle a spot on the underside under the spark crystal, but it is shallow. Still if you can succeed, he looks great aloft. Not as majestic as the Arcadia launching (look up Harlock kids, you’ll thank me) but looks rather good. I also took a Gundam pen to the grooves on the deck.
And yes, I came up with an alternative transformation for this form as well. It just seemed a bit more of a flying aircraft carrier look.
Finally we have his THIRD transformation of…a lion! Now this is caught me off guard. I initially disliked it, but it grew on me. One thing is the lion lower jaw is just the hands tucked in…but it works!
Again articulation is just ok, but you can give a walking loping look. The gun pegs on the hip, which is neat for an assault look. Oh and on the fore leg we finally get an autobot symbol.
At the same time you can peg it on the underside. No jokes kids.
Or leave that area free to take advantage of the stand port so he can leap majestically…ok, no…that is rather sad and forget I mentioned it…
This mode is pretty cool, but feels hindered. That pretty much sums up my feeling on Alpha Trion actually. He looks great, but has restricted movement. The fact of incorporating the third mode though really cut him off at the knees. They were going for too much. Galavatron had no issues with this, nor does Astrotrain (review pending). At the same time, we FINALLY get an official Alpha Trion! Now yes I was hoping for the one in the Orion Pax one shot that turned into the Batmobile/Tumbler, but this works for me. So with that I give him an A-.
Oh I have to point this out, this is BEGGING to be a combiner torso! Some third party company needs to make me some limbs!
