We have looked at Deluxe, Legends, now let us look at the what the Voyager class offers us in the Titans Return line from Hasbro! I have for us a solid heavy hitter, GALVATRON! So, let’s see how this big block of purple rates.
Starting with the infamous alt mode, let us look at the space cannon mode. The barrel is a brilliant orange and the shell purple and grey with red accents. Detailing is strong and I’ll be frank looks like it came from the movie/season 3.
We have the tread legs, though I don’t think he ever used those to move. I mean Galvatron pretty much would just drop down, blast, then stand back up again. I mean he transformed, what, 7 times? Just saying…anyway, in this mode my Starscream was rather nervous, so I think this works pretty well.
Then we have Galvatron’s OTHER mode! Yup, he’s a triple changer folks! Now I have heard people call this just tacked on, but I really dig it. It is a neat variation of the tetra jet, or a Viper from Battlestar Galactica that got the serious fire power.
Now if you follow me on Twitter (@TruStarscreamer), and aren’t a bot…well you are one of a dedicated few. Still you would have seen me calling out a bunch of well respected and awesome reviewers of omitting the stand plug on the Titan Returns figures. Galvatron is no exception! I think this really gives a neat display option to be honest. I had him in this mode for a few days actually like this on the shelf. Now I recommend an Act 5 Tamashii stage to support the weight, and you see the results.
Now being with the Titans Return line, we have to have a Titan Master! Galvatron has Nucleon…wait, wasn’t that the stuff that made Action Masters?
Nucleon is…well…ok, pretty lousy. Single cast plastic, only paint on the robot is on the eyes…and supposed to kind of be like Megatron, but the peg really ruins the bucket head look.
We really don’t care about that though, do we? So…HEAD ON!
Ok, where I didn’t like the robot mode, I REALLY like the head mode. You can see the Megatron face, but I do have to say this is very reminiscent of the Beastwars Megs. Not a bad thing actually, though would like some more color…but this isn’t Galvatron’s proper head.
Here is my big problem…THIS is the package art. That is NOT the same head mode that attaches on to the body. You can see there is a bit more that should be going on. I mean that art looks right, but the Titan Master is so plain…
Which comes to the compounded problem, when you open up Galvatron’s chest, this faceplate pops up. This of course fixes the plain look…but c’mon, it is just a face guard. Plus it limits the head rotation to only a 45 degree range. I have seen mods where people just snip off the mask and glue it to Nucleon, but then he doesn’t fit in storage for the alt modes. Hopefully someone will design something on the 3rd party scene.
Ok, let’s talk about the big guy here. Initially looks fantastic. Imposing body, good bulk, and just a commanding presence. Again looks dead on with the important details. Now I admit less than 10 minutes out of the box I had to break out the Gundam Pen and panel line this guy. Sorry, is now becoming second nature with these guys (and most of my Iron Man figures by the way). I did NOT have to break out the floor polish though.
Stand port works just fine as well. May put Scourge and a few sweeps under him for the main display.
Initial articulation is also pretty decent. No wrist swivels, but you do get ankle pivots, and can finagle a waist swivel if you open a panel on his back. Just that damn restricted neck…
My other problem…the big ole cannon. It pegs into his arm, but it just blocks most of the arm movement. You have to move the shoulder pauldron, move the arm, than put it pack in place. That or just unpeg the gun, more arm and replace. I am sorely tempted to get the Shapeways adapting piece to move the gun to the side of the arm, or hope a third party can just make a smaller gun for bot mode.
So here is the final breakdown…he LOOKS good. Has the iconic parts, colored right and all that…functionally, the robot mode is seriously flawed. He is fun to play with in his alt modes, and looks nice on a shelf. The big thing is the flaws are pretty glaring, especially with how they restrict movement. I had high hopes for Galvatron, but I have to give him a B-. Above average, but just…Still, unless you want to spring for Mania King, he is a nice updated look for the G1 spawn of Unicron.
