So while few and far between, we hit another offering from the 3rd party. Why? Because if Takara/Hasbro won’t do it, someone else will! We are looking at Bad Cube’s rendition of a Masterpiece styled Sun Streaker. Now I am a fan of most of Badcube’s work, though I did pass on War Dog. That figure is essentially the Dark Souls of transformation it seems…so let’s see how Surge here holds up!
So let’s talk about alt mode: NAILED IT. Straight up, hit out of the park, damn that is sexy and he knows it, nailed.
I mean really what is there to complain about? He is right to scale, looks like a yellow Sideswipe…and as bonus, you can change all the chromed parts out with grey plastic like Takara uses.
Plus like the Takara stuff, you can mount his weapon on the roof for a battle mode. Pretty much everything is exactly how I’d want it, save no rear cannon like that one time in that one episode (actually More Than Meets The Eye when being chased by Laserbeak FYI).
Transformation is…interesting. Ok, yeah it was a challenge at first, but I can tell you it makes sense, and does get easier. And look at this beautiful figure!!! Yes the feet are a bit on the odd side. That is the elephant in the room. But after that…I even forgive having the false hood for a chest because it came out oh soooo perfect!
Look at that portrait. The vents look great on the head, the eyes nice and steely cold. There is a “smirk” alt face, which is cool…but I’ll stick with the stoic expression.
Accessories include his rifle, which he hold good ‘n tight, and two cannons that can be pegged into the reverse side of his hand (just flip it around and peg it in, you know the deal). One thing that is cool is that all the weapons can be pegged into his back.
Articulation is pretty good, double jointed elbows, ankle pivots, waste swivel…even can look up generously. No qualms at all.
Finally, Sunsurge looks GREAT next to Sideswipe. This is going to be weird, but next to Sideswipe, the broad feet almost look better, I mean they do line up with his chest…Still this was the make/break on the figure and he passes with flying colors.
If you are collecting Masterpiece figures, GET SUNSURGE. He hits all the feels in the right places. Yes, at first he is complex, but again you can get comfortable with the transformation. Both modes look fantastic, and he scales perfectly with the Takara Master Piece line. Bad Cube gets a full A+ with this project. Now…just have to get around to photograph their bugs…
