Greetings my friends! Today we go back to my favorite line, Transformers! We have something pretty interesting and slightly polarizing, Masterpiece Ironhide. He is garnishing both love and hate in the fandom. Now I am not a die hard Ironhide fan, I have a more affinity for a certain jetformer as we all know…but Ironhide is a mainstay in the G1 continuity, so let’s take a look and see what side of the fence he lands on.
Alt mode is a nice and chunky late 70’s minivan. This feels great in hand, solid with a great weight. The red is perfect, as are the stripes down the side. There is a tone of sculpted and painted detail here as well. From the headlights, windshield wipers, and even the door handles, all hard sculpt. There was serious love here in production.
Like with the other Masterpiece figures, there is a spot to plug a gun in the roof for a battle mode.
As a FANTASTIC throwback to the original figure, there is actually a face in the window! One of the many things with this guy that makes me smile.
The transformation is freaking fantastic and logical. He is also self contained, so the back doesn’t pop off. This also has to be one of the most solid figures I have ever handled. Seriously when in hand you will question every other figure in your collection structurally. His joints are solid, the colors brilliant, and man that head sculpt is dead on perfect.
Now there IS a sled, it is a solid piece of plastic with pegs and peg holes for the crazy amount of accessories Ironhide comes with, even a space underneath for a “shouting” face. These will be interjected through out the review.
The pistols of course can be held, and the jet pack and rear cannon peg into his back. The rest of them peg into this slot on either of his hands.
The sled does look good with Iron Hide though.
The back cannon stokes me the most to be honest. I know it is one of those “from that one episode” accessories, but face it, most of these are. This was that one time he was flying and chasing Skywarp, even though Autobots don’t fly…except when they do…but I digress (got to love G1). This just gives him a more heavy weapons look.
We also have the liquid nitrogen hands, which look pretty cool (ha!).
As well as the OTHER coolant hands, from that time…
and well…ok I don’t even remember when he used this one, but I assume it was another kind of coolant, just because. He also packing two pistols, but I think the only time he dual wielded was in the movie, and that didn’t end well for him, no wait, that was Ratchet…hmmm…something tells me they may be reused for that him.
We also get a scanner that was used in SOS Dinobots and a cut out for the windscreen of what he is scanning. I left that in the package.
Finally we have a jetpack and flame effects. Now I’m ALL about effect parts, but I do kind of wish they could have plugged into his blasters as well just for, well, effect. Also Ironhide has a port in his back side for a display stand! Takara has released their own stand with Tracks and Roadrage, as well and they are soon to sell them individually.
Ironhide has been leaving a few fan groups torn. Structurally he is perfect. Extras? Fantastic. Now let’s go ahead and address the two big issues. First the hip panels. They hinder nothing in articulation, and frankly those panels had to go somewhere. Now the other issue is that big gut. Only way to put it, Ironhide has been hitting the draft energon. I think a split hinge on that front panel could have solved it, making it flatter, or finding a way to make it a little higher placement. either way, it is what it is, and I will say once in hand, it is hard to hate.
In the end, Ironhide fills the niche in my opinion. He is sized right. Hits all the nostalgic feels. Built like a freaking tank. Also the third party really hasn’t brought the right game in for an alternative, unless Fans Toys has something up their sleeve. The transformation is just fun, not complicated at all. I got past the beer gut about 15 minutes into handling him, because he is just that much fun to mess around and pose. I give MP Ironhide a solid A
