Wait? We get ANOTHER review this month? Yup! Ending this year’s reviews possibly, we have Combiner Wars Brawl! This is a new mold for the Combaticons, not a re-tool, so let’s see if the momentum can keep on forward!
Alt mode is a VERY G1 looking tank. I mean the coloring is dead on. I love the little faction symbol on the front. Only complaint is that the turret is completely static. Not even the barrel raises. We do have the 5mm ports to add weapons though to deck it out. The limb weapon does mount on the top as shown in the previous review.
Transformation gives us a…a…wait…isn’t this a freaking Gobot??? Hold on…let me hit my favorite reference site of WWW.TFU.INFO and….YUP! We have a Gobot here folks! No wait wait…missed a transformation…
Initially the transformation is pretty cool. I really like the chest reveal with the micro cannons on the chest. Brawl is a walking weapons platform after all. There are some great things, the legs, the face (no light piping btw) and of course the coloring. Then we have these stubby arms with huge shoulders. They are passable, but fore arms are to be longer than the upper arms after all. The joints again though are quite loose…so yeah, if you haven’t gotten the idea despite pretty much every review I’ve written this year about Hasbro figures…invest in that bottle of floor polish.
Then we have this…odd odd ODD joint for his body. He is pretty much all torso and hips with this tab in between. I have no idea just what they were going with this because it doesn’t quite click tight. I think some filler panels could have saved this. Who knows, a third party make make us a fix kit….with Swindle’s big arm gun of course.
Let’s talk about guns! He can hold his limb weapon but because of how his arms are a bit on the stumpy side, not too well. His pistol also doubles as his tank turret, so if you chose you could leave it on his back for G1 accuracy.
The weapon looks much better arm mounted. You can hit the dynamic poses with out any kind of difficulty. Plus you could just put it on the turret, but man that makes him back heavy. The pistol though looks perfect. Speaking of perfect, You have to give credit to the legs. Great knee bend and ankle tilts. Not used to that in a basic..err..deluxe…umm…warrior…oh I give up…the average type figure. I like dem legs I tell ya! Oh and while not shown, does pass the one leg standing test by the way.
As with Swindle we have the peg hole for display and now I really want a set of the Takara stands. This is something to keep an eye on for the future figures.
Now I have to talk about my biggest grip on this figure. He is too small!!! Brawl is the bully of the Combaticons. Big, overpowering, brawn over brain because frankly usually his brawn DOES win. Swindle towers over him by almost a head! Remember what I mentioned about a filler panel for the torso? That would give us the height. This is really a let down.
While the foot is pretty basic (want to see it? Go to the end of that Swindle review) the arm actually really impressed me! I know I’m going to have to pose him in the traditional spot when combined…but has me intrigued on what the repaint/remold is going to be? Warpath perhaps? Guzzle? Nosecone? I hope we get something cool JUST so I can use him as an arm.
In the end I want to love this guy, but the lack of mid-section, tiny bot mode, stubby arms and lack of moving turret really sets him back a number of points. Still he is a must have if wanting Combaticons for Bruiticus. As a stand alone figure, well…he is neat but not essential. I really really wanted to love him, but all I can say is “eh for the robot mode. On the other hand the g1 almode is cool and I love the arm mode. When all said and done though, I have to give Brawl here just a B+
