Merry Christmas or just hope you are enjoying your December. Sorry the reviews are few and far between, but school is ruling me lately. Still I have time to hit the stores and what did I see? Two combaticons just waiting for me! Since I have been depriving you of my oh so important perspective of kids’ toys I figured for the holiday I’d give you a double review! So let’s tear into some packaging and see if Hasbro’s latest is worth our dime!
Starting out in altmodes! Ahhh, to be back in standard format…Brawl and Swindel are their respective G1 modes of tank and jeep…which look ok, but ummm…there is a *slight* scale issue…Swindle is one big ass jeep/humvee. Mind you, Swindel is a remold (and oh man is it some awesome work, as we will get into) of Combiner Wars Rook so that was already a large tank like vehicle. Brawl is looking decent I have to say. Really brings back how the old G1 toy looked. Both can wear their Hand/Foot weapon ok as well and not look too silly, but I’ll get into Brawl in a later review.
At a closer look, you really have to marvel that this is a remold. At first you really think it is a totally new mold, but you see the subtle changes made and feel the over all foundation from the Rook mode. This will also be used for Hound and I really have no problem with that at all. The coloring is great, that mustard yellow we love and makes me totally forget about that Fall of Cybertron thing they release a few years ago.
Now with Robot mode…oh HELLO SEXY!!! Flat out, dead on, 98.5% NAILED it! I totally forgive the falsey front chest because of the final product. He looks just fantastic. Why hold back the 1.5%? No over sized arm cannon. But you can probably find some kind of proxy, or some third party may make one. That and he’ll look fantastic with a collection of third party weapons behind him like a sales booth.
Oh I did mention that face sculpt? Sorry for the fuzzy but I had to get an extreme close up. This makes me happy in all the right places I tell ya. The purple blocky eyes, the square head…I just wish he had a smirk, but this is his more “this deal is going south” look. The love was shown here, and I totally forgive them for the FOC piece of junk.
Swindle holds his weapons just fine. Though like Dragstrip I kind of like the shoulder mount idea for the limb weapon. Articulation is just like Rook’s of course, and yes you will have to tighten the joints.
One final thing to note, Swindle has the peg hole for a display stand! Oh was so happy to see this again, and apparently Takara will be releasing stands soon, so this bodes well for future figures.
While we know Swindle is a leg, the mode does have bot options. I have to say he makes a decent arm, so when the Hound version comes out, I may keep this in mind.
While I’m a Starscream fanboy, Swindle will probably be a close second for my favorite Decepticon, and Hasbro really nailed this figure on the head. Only two dings, and they are minor of alt mode scale and no big ass arm gun. After that, really this guy is fantastic! Keep in mind, this is a remold! It is soooo well done! This would be a great stand alone purchase, but you know you have to get the rest of the team. Still in the end I give Swindle here a solid A+
