I am sooo sorry I have been quiet this month! I actually started night classes, so while still getting stuff, finding time to actually write about it between studies alas is scarce, plus the ACBA tournament (entry right here, check it out!)…but there was NO way I would let this guy not get mentioned! One of the top scalped figures of the first wave (well, now everyone is going after Phasma at this time), Kylo seems to be the man to beat in the upcoming movie. I like baddies, so I had to have him…so let us see how this guy stokes the engine of the hype train!
Oh man, where to begin…ok, the robe. EVERYONE talks about it, so I will as well. The cloth (soft goods) was not what I was expecting. First I do have to say I think it is a tad too long. Kylo would be tripping over it in battle. Still though it drapes around his legs well, and doesn’t hinder his sanding. THAT is important. If all hard plastic, it could set him off balance.
What is cool though is he does have that right balance with the hard sculpted plastic to give that proper detail. Kylo looks like he is no spoiled general, untested in battle.
The hood is also part of the fabric. This is great because it can be lowered (you have to kind of fold it inside out to not go back over the helmet) to reveal this wonderfully ominous visage…oh yes…it looks just fantastic. I love the painted silver on the face and the slight dents and ridges. Just that bit of imperfection of a battle scarred soldier. This goes great with the tattered cloak.
Accessory count is on the low end though. We have his light saber and the blade is removable for the retracted look. This is cool, BUT there is no place for him to hang/store the hilt on his person when not holding it. So aside from a pre-battle stance, why bother? Also I would have loved an alternate head. I mean the pictures are out there, so it is no mystery what he looks like.
I’m not trying to nit-pick, but hey this IS a review. The light saber though looks fantastic. Now one of my biggest issues with the Black series is the fact they only have single jointed elbows. I mean they can put them on the Marvel Legends (ok not the female figures, but that is another rant all together), and especially with a sword user, they are really needed.
BUT the designers gave him a much more dynamic wrist bend. This allows him to point the blade forward or just have sharper angles when holding the saber. Both hands are holding hands, though I would have liked one splayed to use the Force, like the Elite version does.
Articulation does not let me down though. While I complained about the elbows, the legs are just fine. Under the cloth robes are soft plastic robes. They bend out of the way though. Did I mention the legs even have ankle pivots! Also in his clothes he seems to have an ab crunch in there, so he can get low, but look ready for battle…
You seriously get some fantastic dynamic poses with Kylo. Oh and and with the robes being a bit long, they have a nice sweeping effect. It looks cool, but in person it just works really well.
Oh and yes, he can get that awesome pose from the trailer.
Which looks even better from the other side! I probably could have scrapped this entire review and just showed you this picture. It tells you all you really need to know…he gets the stances, looks fantastic…there are of course many reviews already on Kylo out there, but really once you get him in hand do you see the true meaning. I normally am not a fan of the Black series, yet this guy now makes me want more. That is a scary thing, could it be a Mind Trick? I give Kylo Ren from the Black Series a solid A+ Now I need Phasma…and a Storm Trooper…oh and the Figuarts…oh crap…I’m in deep aren’t I?
