Working through the back log I found this guy…now before I just didn’t have time for —oh never mind, that joke has been beaten to death…ANYWAY, finally got to crack this guy open! I will say I have been surprised by not seeing this guy out in stores, but then I am down in North Carolina. So let us see how Hasbro presented this very ambitious figure.
We are going to break format and start with the robot mode. Just let your eyes drink this in. Aside from the Masterpiece that I may or may not have…this is a is a near perfect visual representation of Ultra Magnus. He has stature, confidence…and freaking huge shoulders, with missiles even! One really doesn’t have much to complain about with the layout.
Articulation is really above par for Hasbro’s toy releases. We have thigh swivels, deep bending knees, head moves fine all around, and even the shoulders have moving panels to allow arm movement. He can compact himself to the 3 point landing pose just fine. Yes I want more, waist swivel, ankle tilts and wrists, but really for a Leader Class, this isn’t too shabby.
Ultra Magnus comes with two hand cannons as well. Now alas he can not hold them two tightly. They tend to drop at the drop of a hat. No really, I tossed my hat on the table and one fell out.
But you take the missile pods and plug them all together and Magnus has his hammer of justice! This is a neat trend from Transformers Animated, and I totally get behind having Ultra Magnus being Thor.
Speaking of Thor, I think if you do the hammer time mode, just use the top half. The longer handle is a waste. Due to no wrist swivels it’s not like he can use two hands to hold it, so just give him his gun back. Plus it looks cooler.
Now let’s look at this awesome torso and face sculpt. Maybe this is where the money from RID went? Some great painting on here. I love the gold accents on his sides. Plus look at that steely blue eye paint. If you don’t do light piping, do this! This is a fantastic rendition of the IDW Magnus. IDW you ask? Not G1? Are you sure? Well you see if you read the comics…well…
Oh hello there! Why it’s Minimus Ambus! Click here for spoilers on him!
Yup! No longer a white Prime/Convoy in battle armor, oh no…he’s a freaking Mobile Suit! With Minimus as the pilot!
I tell you for such a little figure, again Hasbro went all out. The legs allow some posing, and while the arms aren’t much in movement, they have some fantastic sculpted detail.
And look at that face! Painted eyes, and facial detail…really they went all out with this…
All that and he still transformers as well…into such a TINY car! I did a little panel lining…don’t worry, that was my mess up, not Hasbro’s.
It would be a crime not to mention the internal of the control area. This could have been blank plastic, but we have a full pilot station here. Repro labels is supposed to be offering some more stuff to add some color. Me, I’m just impressed on the level of love put in to this guy.
Finally, yes this is a transformer, and Ultra Magnus becomes his iconic car carrier. The cab does not separate, much like in the MP version. With this, he sports some pretty neat engineering. My only gripe is I would have liked the red plastic in front be blue. The weapons also peg on. Yay I guess.
The front of the cab is a great aggressive truck even if on the smaller side. One of my few (yes need more, so tell your friends, @trustarscreamer!) twitter followers mentioned that this would be an AWESOME bad guy in Disney’s Cars.
Finally YES he can carry Combiner Wars cars! So he is perfect in scale ish…but the play value is there.
Aside for some minor gripes, this is Hasbro going all out. If you don’t want to shell out a ton for the MP Magnus, this is a fantastic place holder. You want something good for your IDW style collection, this is the figure. Now we just need a properly scaled Rodimus, but until then I give Ultra Magnus a solid A+ Now…just what will they re-use this guy for? That should be interesting…
