Back in the 90’s I was mildly obsessed with this movie…had never read the comic, but loved the concept, the costume…everything. Then I saw the film with Timothy Dalton as a villian, the flight scenes, Jennifer Connelly’s *ahem* talent…really, it was her acting…I swear…but anyway…I liked the Rocketeer. Now 24 years later…holy crap, 24? Damn I’m old…anyway…Funko gives us a 1/12 scale figure! I had me a coupon for Toys R Us and now we get to give him a look over!
While the box has a window front and collector friendly, it’s the back that I absolutely love! We get the poster I fell in love with plus an ACBA (Articulated Comic Book Art, Check them out sometime) worthy picture of the figure on the back. Really well done.
Looking at the figure itself, we have two heads, both helmeted and un masked. The regular had is cool look, it really doesn’t look like Billy Campbell. Just a generic guy, yes, but not a bad looking one. Hell the eyes are painted perfect, I can’t say the same about some of my Marvel Legends. The clothes look great though. Especially the flight jacket. Nice brightly painted buttons, and the pants have all the nice cloth folds I love. Even the boots have a great wash to them.
Accessories are the other head and the Luger pistol. The pistol looks nice, but the grip could be better. It tends to fall aside when the figure is jarred, or even just out of his hand outright.
The rocket pack looks fantastic! All the nice rivets and ridges, and great metallic paint. My favorite detail is putting the gum on the fuel tank leak. Really a nice bit of love there.
With the helmet, oh he looks fantastic. His other hand is a nice generic open hand, but in a natural pose. This looks great now matter where placed. I almost wanted one holding the ignition switch, but this just looks better.
My biggest issue is the articulation with the shoulder joint, that is as high as the arm will go. The elbows are single jointed, but the legs are double. Also the joints themselves are made of clear plastic, so I do worry about them becoming brittle.
Final verdict is that this is a cool figure of a greatly underappreciated character. It has it’s faults with posing, but the paint work and details really do make up for that. I will say, if you can get him with a coupon, you’ll feel a bit better about the purchase. A solid B+
