Welcome back to another wild trip to the third party…We have Warbotron’s Whirlwind, or not-Vortex. I have to say, for third party naming, not too bad…The Warbotron adventure has been interesting, so let’s see what twist and turns this figure leads us through!
Altmode is a badass military helicopter. This has some great lines, weapons, and I love the “burned” look on the main gun barrel. Casually this would normally get 9s all the way, but I have two major gripes. First there was an error with the assembly for all the units, the rear propeller is actually backwards! If you have seen how most helicopters are, it is reversed, plus the blades would have better clearance.
Then we have this…the entire front chunk is actually just a weapon. He’s a dreaded parts former. So if Whirlwind was held prisoner and was disarmed, no transforming for him! I just felt this was a major cop out from the engineering team…oh well…let’s move on!
The transformation is pretty straightforward and we get yet another stately robot. This has been standard fare with Warbotron. While the colors would not have been my first choice, (I’d want a bit more G1 styled coloring) they look decent.
Articulations could be better, but he does pass the one leg test.
Now let’s talk WEAPONS! This is where the fun begins with Warbotron. First there is the big gun from the copter. There is a handle the flips out when you transform it to allow him to hold it. Shame though that the wrist swivel is really loose, so you have to set it on the arm or it will flop to the side.
Then there are the small cannons on shoulders. These can be moved to the arms for more aiming options. There are smaller handles that can be deployed to use as hand weapons, BUT the way the hands are positioned, it really can’t be held.
There are these two little yellow pieces though, and with those you can even combine the weapons for double blasting action.
Then we have the swords, oh I LOVE these! The helicopter blades ARE his blades! Four of them, so we have all kinds of slice and dice action!
Plus the swords can be arm mounted as well. This Whirlwind can be a serious close combat kind of guy…
Again breaking out the yellow plastic bits, you can get creative with the weapons! From the double ended sword, to the more Wovlerine style blades, you can have Whirlwind be a…well…whirlwind in the battle field!
Finally you can just have fun and combine the various weapon placements. In my mind Whirlwind is commando noted for adjusting to the battle’s need. This is really the fun with Warbotron. I may end up sharing the various weapons with all the different guys, just to kind of show how the team backs each other up.
As a stand alone figure I give Whirlwind an A-/B+…but at his pricing, that is a little bit of a let down. Still this is part of a team, so we all know there is still a bigger judgment to be made…and I just got a big ole box the other day…so that judgment may be soon…
