Greetings! And welcome to the first post of 2015! This year I resolve to finish what I started…(wait, what do you mean by “Fall of Cybertron Bruiticus?) so today we have the fifth and final member of team Quantron: Metalstorm! Maketoys version of Scattershot. This guy is a brute, so let’s hit the body of this team…
Breaking the norm, we are starting with Metalstorm in robot mode. This is a nice solid bot! . My main issue is with the ankles. It is almost impossible to find that happy medium where he isn’t back heavy. Once found though he is pretty stable. The coloring is awesome, and the held sculpt is well defined. Just a strong looking robot.
Even while chunky He is still well balanced enough to pass the single leg test!
Articulation is also spot on, save the head can’t look up. Eh, that I can deal with.
When you start adding weapons things get even more fun. He reminds me for some reason of Fans Project Assaulter. Maybe it’s the super strong hips. The powerful profile…who knows.
I did say weapons right? Holy high hell, this guy gets decked out! Two rifles, under carriage grenade launcher, leg rocket boosters to move the bulk, and the other of all blasters on his back to take out some kind of big baddie…
This set up looks amazing…BUT remember what I said about the back heavy stuff? yeah, it gets worse. So getting him to stand like this was just a pain in the ass! As impressive as this looks, fully laden this figure is no where as fun as the rest of the crew… Plus they really don’t do anything when not being used. I think they needed an independent combined mode, like a gun emplacement, but I’m just being nerdy and need to get over it. So lest strip him down and transform him!
So transforming the core robot yields…umm…this? Ok, I have nothing really…just a block with wings.
I guess it kind of reminds me of a Beta fighter from Robotech/Mospedia. It really is just missing something…wait…I have a pile of stuff…hmmm…
Grabbing and attaching that cannon is what you need to finish this. Wait, so to complete the transformation, you need to add a…part? Does that make him a…oh no…he’s a…PARTS FORMER! Yeah, they went the route, and it is a slight let down, but Metalstorm needs do the swap and add…
Throwing the rest of the parts on does complete the ship mode though. The rifles give some great firepower, and the boosters make the profile pretty badass. Would not like this barreling down on me.
From the back again the boosters do their job. The rear “cannons” though…that is just the combined form’s head looking down. Again another cop out. I mean if they were partsforming already, why not something to hide the head?
The total package is better than the robot fully decked out, yes. Still, all the others don’t NEED their parts.
Metal storm is the big guy of the team, but ironically I find him the weakest in design. Partsforming, being off balance and such, having the most to offer also gives him the most to complain about. Still, 4 out of 5 isn’t too bad, but this was not a cheap set. If I just bought him as a stand alone figure I would really be let down. Then again, I didn’t buy him and the others just for figures…so next on the agenda, in the words of the Red Ranger…”Lets bring them together!”
