On the fifth night of Hanukkah Starscreamer Reviewed for me…Generations Brainstorm! Yes another of Hasbro’s anticipated releases! This time they are taking on not only a figure 3rd parties have now twice tackled, but also the Headmaster gimmick! So let’s see if this is keeping the momentum…
To start off in jet mode…well…this is a space jet…It’s not bad mind you, just really kind of lack luster. The colors are all there, the g1 look is there…it’s just…I don’t know…
Actually I do, it’s just a folded up robot mode with the nose cone swung forward. I mean I have Smart Robin, so I’m good for an awesome space jet, but in this department the Hasbro is just ok.
Now one thing that is really cool is the stand port is back! So you can display this guy airborne if you choose. This gives some nice bonus points.
The jet is piloted by THIS little guy…who is…well a little guy. Hasbro doesn’t bring too much new back to the table, but it works. I have to say it DOES stand better than Toyworld’s Headmasters.
Robot mode though, this is a different story. This is a great bot mode. The proportions are perfect. Body details are great. I really have no desire to break out the panel liner. And then there is the gimmick…
That little robot turns into a perfect sized head for this body!
When plugged in, this little flap drops down with his tech specs! A great throw back to back in the day of G1.
Now that actual head…wow, this is a GREAT sculpt! This hits the G1 and IDW style dead on. No the face plate does not come off…but still I have zero issues with this.
Brainstorm comes with his two guns that he can wield with no problem. I think they look good left on the nosecone myself, but that is just opinion.
Articulation is about 90% there. Really would have liked a waist swivel, I think it could have been applied. Nitpicking, I’d also want wrist swivels, but I’m ok. He does have ankle tilts and some serious ratcheting on his hips.
Also he passes the one legged test with flying colors!!
Alas he does NOT come with his coveted brief case, but I happen to have one that scales nicely with him…just don’t ask about Gaia Memories.
Finally I have to show this off. Doing a partial transformation and taking advantage of the display stand you can make this form. This is BEGGING to be remade into Jetstorm! Hasbro, if you can make us Tankor, you can make us this!!
All in all, I give Brainstorm here a A-. The awesome robot mode and use of the stand ports more than make up for the lack luster alt mode. Again like Jetfire, no real reason to not have this guy. Do take note, when I opened him up, the head did NOT want to be released before transforming, but there are a few tutorials on how to fix that. Is this figure better than Smart Robin? No, but this is still a great figure. Hopefully this is a new trend for Hasbro.
