On the third night of Hanukkah Starscreamer reviewed for me…The Master Chief! I admit it, I never thought I’d get one of these guys. McFarlane figures never quite pulled me in. Still the combination that it IS the Master Chief, and was on sale…yes, a sale price got me, I celebrate Hanukkah, draw your own conclusions, I won’t be offended lol. So let’s warm up the X box and dive in!
After freeing him from the plastic I had to pause. This is an EXCELLENT representation of the Master Chief! The detailing is just amazing. I love the helmet, the grooves in the armor, the whole package. He comes with rail gun which is also lovingly detailed. I may get more figures JUST for more weapons…crap…another rabbit hole…
The backpack is just badass with the jets. From all angles I am impressed. Now McFarlane is well known for details yes, but they are also more known for more statuesque figures instead of well…action.
The figure boasts 27 points of articulation, and yes it’s all there. Nothing dynamic like a Figuart or some Marvel Legends, but still we get some good action spots. Also the weapon has a peg that fits in the port in his back as well as on his thighs. So if you have more, you can deck him out.
The other great accessory is the little Cortana. This comes in a stand that after I finished taking the pictures I learned was removable. Still Chief here can hold it. Great for those mid stage cut scenes. She is tiny but looks great!
Finally when you break out the additional hardware…oh yes…so break out some 3rd party goodness or any other army stuff and let him wade into battle!
For nit picking, which as a reviewer I do have to do, there are two major issues. First the hips could offer more movement, actually the legs in general. I couldn’t get him to take a knee. Second, after all the posing and playing the joints have gotten a bit loose. He could still stand and look imposing, but just not as tight. I may see if I can take some floor polish to the joints to see what miracles it can do.
When all said and done though this is a damn cool figure. Plus if you have a Walgreens card, he was about $10. So I feel I have my value. Of course there are other McFarlane Halo figures, and the quality of this now has me quite tempted. I will say having at least one in your collection will look great on your shelf, desk at work or just integrated with other sci-fi troops. I give it a Grade A
