A Transformer! Yes! Wait, no, kinda…we have a third party entry today! From the Quantron box set, Sonic Drill! Otherwise known as from the Maketoys interpretation of Computron, Nosecone! Now when I got the set I looked up the reviews, and this one reviewer known as Silverbolt threw one of the greatest nerd rants about this figure…so I had to see what the hubub was about…read on, but honestly, I think he had a few beers when messing with the figure…
He comes in robot mode and I got to say, this is a cool bot. I had the original Nosecone back in the day, and yeah a simple Scramble City bot. This is NOT that. He has all the cool sharp angles, deep lines (that DON’T have to be panel lined thank you) and a hell of a profile. The colors are right back to the original figure, but man he has some personality.
Transformation…well it could be easier lol…but no where did I find it as rage inducing as poor Silverbolt did. He’s a drill tank, so not the most inspired alt mode. The lights are parts formed, but I can deal with it. I love how the cannons look in this mode, and the coloring translates well. No wheels on the treads, but then the last tank I had from Maketoys, the Mobine, didn’t either. Still I think it is pretty spiffy.
Back to the robot mode! I LOVE his weapons, flat out love them. Plus the drill can be attached as a melee weapon as well. His face is asymmetrical with the targeting monocle, which long time readers will know I’m a fan of things like that.
As much as I love the guns, they are not removable…sort of…they are hinged and can swing away from the hands, but they do not pop off, so he doesn’t share. Not a bad thing I guess because now I won’t ever lose them.
Articulation is decent, you get all you could ask, from ankle tilts to a waist joint…but the knees are tricky. There are actually two knee joints, both on groove ratchets, so sometimes you think you are standing him up but one side may be lower than the other.
Also he is TOP HEAVY! With the drill if not balanced right, he will fall backwards. One major nit pick is that he could have had some kind of heel spur to compensate. So most dynamic poses will need him to have the weight in the front.
Last I have to mention the extra arms. Yeah he has these smaller waldo arms that deploy from his shoulders. One rumor is that his Shattered Glass/EEEEEVIL redeco will be like the Terrorcon Blot or Rippersnapper and these are just the little arms, but they are a neat touch.
All in all, not a bad figure. Not perfect, again wish he has heel spurs and better knees…but no where is he range inducing. Big thing though is that this is from a set…so yes you got to buy the entire crew at once, and that is a big ole chunk of change. I’ll work my way through the team (hopefully lol) and then may even get to the big guy himself…but you’ll have to keep coming back to find that out…
