Today we have a special figure for you all…30 out of 30 in the “Thrilling Thirty” Promotion. The “first fan made bot!” and all…WINDBLADE! I will say, this is an interesting figure on a number of levels, so let’s dive in!
Even though she comes in robot, as per form, we start in alt mode. This is a plane…of some kind…and here is where things start coming apart…literally. She can’t hold together, mostly because a lot of tabs are just too small!
Windblade’s jet form just is a mish mash in a jet form. The worst offenders are the tabs in front that I KNOW will snap one day, and the rear section that is just open, plus since the legs are used, the waist swivel never wants to stays straight…so this leads to an uneven plane body.
From this angle you can see that in this mode there are a robot parts visible. Namely her chest armor. Also her arms have no where to hide, so they just sit on the sides. Windblade is kind of like Thrust’s weird cousin. She shares the VTOL fans that can pivot. This kind of looks cool, but the plastic is so thin I am already getting stress marks on it. The thin plastic is the crux of the problem. If this was a voyager figure, we probably wouldn’t have 2/3 the issues. Kind of like Generations Galvatron.
Ok, time to check on robot mode! This is a totally different package. I love the colors, especially the blue bits, and REALLY love her face. Apparently the fans wanted the Geisha girl, so they got the Geisha! The shoulder wings are cool and the leg design visually is awesome. Also she has her sword scabbard that can peg into either thigh.
That scabbard is a live saver on posing! The wings just make her back heavy, and while the legs look cool, they can’t balance to save a life. With any of my favorite dynamic poses I’m lucky if I can get just the feet in contact with the ground. The heels just don’t want to reach, which of course one less point of support. The scabbard kind of helps to make a tripod.
Articulation is…well…her is the deal. She has all the joints one could ask for. Hip, knees, waist, neck, swiveling wrists, all but ankles…the thing is the SCULPT of the mold still limits a lot of these! Her collar won’t let her head look all around, the red parts of her thighs block motion…and the aforementioned balance issues…even if you can get the pose, she can’t stand in it.
Now Windblade comes with one of the most beautiful weapons Hasbro has made. I absolutely love her sword. Not saying it’s worth buying just for the weapon, buuuuut if someone like Dr. Wu made it, well, it would be half the price of the figure.
She can also hold the scabbard in her free hand. This is a really nice touch, I could totally see her just grabbing it off her hip, drawing the blade then just chucking the scabbard at her opponent as a distraction.
This is the odd one, her “comb” can unplug from her head and can be held. I’m not sure if she uses this in the comic or not, but add some more dynamic to the figure…
Or she is just using it to flirt with Drift from across the toy shelf…who knows…
Last and most important…Windblade has a stand port! This is actually rubberized, so gets dome decent grip! Let me tell you, this is the saving grace for this figure…
This allows her to be suspended in the air and now you don’t have to worry about those weak legs!
The advantage with her being of thin plastic allows the stand to hold her high and lofty above all perils…
So in the end…is this a good figure? I actually want to say no. I’m scared to transform her because of the plastic tolerances, plus the alt mode is meh. Aside from standing you can’t do too much posing with out a stand…BUT we have a totally original figure, a plane that is NOT a Seeker design…and a symbol of Hasbro interacting with the fans. It’s almost worth having just to hope Hasbo will do it again. Wind blade does have a unique style, and yes can be a great display piece.
So I am torn, as a toy, I can’t recommend this. I would not give this figure to a ten year old kid, you’ll find it broken and forgotten…but as a collectors item, a display piece, yes. Just be aware of what you are getting as a figure, but also be aware of what you are getting as an over all item.
