The new Generations line has hit some cool things from left field as of late, Orion Pax, Rhinox…but this one, oh this one caught me off guard. Armada?? Now the fact they are using this design in the comics is another “huh” moment…but still. I found this one of the cooler molds back in the day with a few catches, so will the update work?
Well to start with the jet mode, aside from being smaller (this is a deluxe), no sounds (not a bad thing) or Swindle, this I pretty much dead on. He even has landing gear…but if the runway is too short…
We HAVE GERWALK! Yeah this mold does it almost as well as they Cyberverse Dreadwing and Skyquake figures. I am VERY pleased. This guy looks cool like this perched by your computer btw…
Why so serious? I have to ask because this is one of the few Starscream figures without a smirk…but still a nice detailed face sculpt. Still a more G1 look than Armada, but this is more the face in the comics…
Now Robot mode really impressed me. The only major issue I have with the design is the nose cone is just too big. If they had made a way for it to collapse into itself or just get smaller, then it would be perfect. The feet are nice and chunky with heel spurs so he stands just fine. Also, the back pack folds down. This was my #1 issue with the Armada mold. It just ate shelf space.
I really like the back on this guy as well. This isn’t a back pack of doom, it really looks good with the robot mode. Also check out that light piping on the back of his head!
Now you see this translucent plastic in the wings…well this showcases one of my favorite things they do with most of, but never enough of, in the Generations line…integrated weapons.
These unfold into his energon sword. Now in Armada this was actually his wing tip, but you can fold it back if you want to go for show accuracy.
Also you can fold up the back pack if you want it to be like the original. This really shows the love they put into this figure.
He also has his hyper cannons. These are just friction missiles, but damn do they have range! You just push in the engines and just take note where they land.
Since this IS Armada, we have to talk minicons! We have two static ports on the engines/cannons..
As well as one on each arm. So I can’t peg in any of the other Generations weapons, but can find use for all those Power Core Combiners I got a few years ago! They did just release a new minicon team after all…
Articulation is also pretty damn good as well. Now I’d kill for a waist swivel, but aside from that I have zero issues. With the option of folding the wings and back pack, you leave yourself open to some nice posing options. This is a Starscream of action!
When I FIRST saw the preview shots for this guy I was skeptical…but I knew I was going to buy him. I AM a Starscream fanboy after all…but I am glad I did. He really shows how Hasbro is stepping up their game. While smaller, we have more articulation and some more playability. I HIGHLY recommend him if you find him on the shelves.
