Alright, I actually WASN’T going to review this guy due to my back log…BUT thanks to Vangelus (awesome reviewer extrodinair…) and Figure Fan Zero (totally under rated reviewer you should all follow) I felt left out…so since they showed off THEIR Hardbones, I figured I should just whip mine out…OK THAT IS THE ONLY PLAY ON THE NAME I WILL DO…really…I promise…
Hardbone of course is an updated look on G1 Headmaster Hard Head. Straight up the alt mode just nails it. While an H-tank (yay….) the original figure was…well…actually one of the original H-Tanks, so it works. I love the green and having on the side cannons really gives some dimension to the palate. For weapons we have the side guns/rifles. They can peg on the back treads or the front. Then there is the big ole artillery cannon. I will straight up warn you, that is THE biggest pain to plug into one of the two ports. Pick the one you like…you will never want to switch it.
The rear tread actually peg into position. What is cool is there are two positions! The flat and a raised. I like to think he becomes a more stable artillery platform.
Of course as with all Headmasters, we have the pilot. He fits nice and snug in his compartment.
The robot form is a nice mini version of the big bot.
Now compared to the Fans Project Headmasters, yes Toy World’s has some more articulation. I really like the ball jointed arms and hips. The thing is TW’s has the back pack of doom…so he is back HEAVY! It was a pain to get him to stand for the two shots.
Size wise…just a bit bigger on TW’s side…but since Hard Head WAS the muscle of the team, it works.
Robot mode now…we have a mixed bag…Transformation is pretty cool though, especially the legs and feet. Top half is basic but works. Again the color palate is just perfect. Green, grey, black…a touch of silver. We also have joints! Knees, shoulders, hips…a waist joint! Even where the headmaster attaches swivels! All I could want! Well…kind of…And this is the killer…With this figure we have awesome and it is awesome to the top level, then mixed in that awesomeness are sporadic doses of fail…and oh lord do they bring it down…
That was just gravity making the arm swivel. That joint is loose…as is the wrist joint…plus the arms never feel like they click when you extend them. It kills me, the legs are just solid! The arms? Flippity floppity, disappointment is on it’s way…
So not to dwell, let’s go to the fun, better, positive stuff! The head sculpt is just great. A nice updated look. The chest opens to have an engine instead of the tech specs. That was a nice throwback to G1.
Under the arms, inside the treads are missile packs. Nice added firepower.
Now one of my favorite bonuses…his legs open to two compartments. Inside we have a combat knife and this odd stick thing…
These work as a nice close combat attack and a grenade to chuck.
What is more fun is you can add them to the guns. We have both a bayonet and a rifle extension!
Plus it can be added to the main cannon to give it a more accurate sniping barrel. It can also be added as a scope for the big gun. Oh and that big orange barrel piece that is missing?
Yup, it can be added to make the rifle a more BFG type of gun. This aspect of the figure rules in my opinion. Just gives all kinds of variation to the character.
One REALLY neat feature of Toy World’s Headmasters is the head connection is a more universal one. I can put any Headmaster on this body, though I can’t for the Fans Project ones…
And I do mean ANY Headmaster (FYI, Hardbone fits on the G1 guys just as well). This is a really badass bonus I have to say…so if you have the G1 Hardhead, you can totally upgrade his body now.
Scaled to Smart Robin, Hardbone is a more imposing figure. Still as I said before, of the Headmasters, he WAS the big guy. So I think he fits in with the display just fine. This is good, because I think this is the one Headmaster that Fans Project isn’t doing…but hey that line is still young. Now, is he essential? Well if you HAVE to have the updated team yes. You can get him at Captured Prey and of course Big Bad Toystore. Where he is good, he is just fantastic…but you have to be aware of the weaknesses.
(wow, I really did make it through the review with out making a joke…NICE)
