With a new season of Transformers Prime, now Beast Hunters, we have new characters, and an entire new faction! We have the return of the Predacons led by Predaking, who is pretty beastly according to the preview. Does his figure match the fury?
To start of with beast mode, we have a brilliant orange and black dragon. This is reminiscent of the G1 Predacons deco. He has a fierce face with a moveable jaw and a great wingspan.
He can rear up on his hind legs…sorta…the tail has zero articulation due to the transformation. The neck can look left and right as well as the wings can have various positions, so he does have some cool body language. Still, he looks like something my old D&D party would go against…hmmm….
Yup, good thing my warlock there has +3 resistance to fire…oh god I’m a dork…but still…
For accessories we have Predaking’s Hydra Cannons. These are supposed to be sentient, so we may see them crawling around on the show. These can be pegged into his shoulders in beast mode, this is a nod to Cybertron Scourge I think. They do add a bit of a dynamic I will say, but do take away from the dragon form.
Robot mode is cool…kinda. I can see the G1 Predaking more with the wings and colors. I like the black flip out bits on the should pads BUT I hate the positioning of the wings! They are more on his ribcage than up by his shoulders. To give the illusion that they are higher you have to rotate them up and that will definitely take up a lot more shelf space. Now I do like his feet and the legs with the knees being able to twist. I do like the claw hands and they even have a wrist swivel!
Predaking’s face just radiates EVIL. A strong jaw, black and silver, one of my favorite villain faces by far.
He isn’t the most agile, but can loom over quite menacingly. I hope we see something like this in the show, him gearing to just leap and take flight with those wings!
The tail of Predaking becomes this sword. It is a cool sword I do have to say…
Problem is it has to be held in THIS hand. One part has the gap for the sword to peg in loosely, but the other part doesn’t have it, so in the end it is kind of wobbly. It falls out way to easy in my opinion.
Now the Hydra Cannons can be pegged to his arms, but you have to flip the hands so the three toes are inward. I am not the biggest fan of these guys in bot mode.
They can also be connected together for a kind of super cannon mode. This actually reminded me of Megatron in the first Transformers Movie making his fusion canon.
I will admit, it is novel, but it is a PAIN to get him balanced with the double cannons.
For kicks I put them on his shoulders like Cybertron Scourge, and well…if they could have looked forward instead of straight up, it would have made him so much much cooler…
Bottom line, this is an ok figure, but not essential. They are making an even larger version of this guy and I am more pinning my hopes on that. He is cool, don’t get me wrong, but is flawed. Get him if you must, but you won’t be hating life not having him.
