New toy line (for me) from Bandai! This is the Super Robot Chogokin series of Shin Mazinger Z. Lots of metal, lots of nostalgia, but is it worth getting into? Read on dear readers!…no…wait…this is a Super Robot…gotta shout it…READER READ ON!!!
Mazinger Z, if you don’t know by now, is THE epitome of the Anime Super Robot. Over 90 episodes in the original series back in the 70’s. A number of spin offs and reboots, this is the original Rocket Punch here people…Piloted by Kabuto Koji, this robot gave him the potential to be a God or Devil. If you want more, watch the series, or Wikipedia…we are here to talk about toys!
Ok, AMAZING packaging here. Save for the UPC code, I love the photography that really shows what this figure is about! Even if you are a MISB collector, this is worth having, and the box is totally worth saving.
He has a pretty good range for poses, though the hips don’t offer too much in going forward. No super kicks per say. The arms though have awesome elbows that fold inward, and even the neck lets the head have nice accent angles.
The “C” in SRC is all about the Chogokin, or super alloy. This guy has a LOT of metal in him, the legs, arms, and body. I would not want him thrown at me. This also give him a great shine, and for the super robots, it is all about the shiny action shot!
As I said, action shots lol. Now for the accessories, I will talk about them as they are integrated into the pictures this time. I have to talk about the hands though, they are a PAIN to switch! Serious grip on the pegs, and tighter than the Figuarts W mold. His hands are fists, open splayed hands, the above pointed finger…
And this bad boy, the decapitated Garuda head! I love this, because Mazinger does NOT F’ around! there is also a pair of holding things hands, which are cool because they hold most weapons…
…like this here axe…which is great to have around because HE DIDN’T COME WITH ANY WEAPONS! Go figure! Now if you have any of the other SRC figures, some do have swords and all, so yes he could wield those. Still, why give the hands? I could have other over the top hands, like chopping…or more Effect parts…
Speaking of Effect parts, one of the cooler ones I have seen involves the breast plate energy beams…or as they say in the show *ahem*…BREAST FIRE!!!!! Just pull off the red plate pieces, and plug in the translucent ones. Now they look like they are warming up…and then…
ZAP! they are shining! This in itself is great for display. The beams just snap right on, with no fear of them popping off. Solid plastic, though they have sharp edges.
Now another nice touch is that the Pilder is separate. At this scale that isn’t a good thing though, I really see this having the potential of getting lost if you take it out for display purpose. Still it pegs right into Mazinger’s helmet.
PILDER ON! and now we can go fight baddies! The peg holds it in there very secure I do, though be warned the tail fin is pointy!!
Now my favorite accessory, the Jet Scrander. In Shin Maziner Z this guy is more detailed and has unusual rocket boosters. The wings flex up and down and the boosters are on ball joints so they allow him to look like his is juking and weaving in the sky. This pegs right on his back…
Add one of the two belts and he is complete! Now THIS is what this figure is all about. I totally love this form and will be how he is displayed.
With the wings being able to flex like they do, the can simulate his shoulder making them flex. This allows all kind of over the top poses.
When taking these pictures I must have messed with him for hours getting the poses just right. With this kind of control, you can be picky. *note the arm joints did get a bit loose from all the messing around*
Now another accessory you will find is this *little* peg that has a hole in it. This plugs into a port on his back and allows you to pose him on a Tamashii stage as if he was in flight. USE AN ACT 5 STAGE!!! Remember all that die cast adds serious weight.
This is an amazing figure who looks great on your shelf. Bandai also has the more traditional Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger. For them they even have ANOTHER effect part kit that has the Rocket Punches as well as the older style Jet Scrander. You can still get this guy at a GREAT Price. He is a great display piece and I am happy to have him.
