Well where there is Optimus Prime, you will have Megatron seeking vengeance for some loss or what not. Again, this is not the FE, but let us see how he fairs to his counterpart in this line.
One of the things I really like about the Transformers Prime show is that it delved into the past of these two. Megatron, formally Megatronus, was Prime’s near brother in his old Orion Pax days. With Pax becoming the next Prime, they had a falling out and the war began. The leader of the Decepticons in the RID line translates to a nice bold figure. His Alt mode is a space jet, akin to his first movie line form. I really can’t say I hate it, because it is a space ship, so earth mode to compare it to.
His main weapon is of course his iconic fusion cannon. The coloring is a beige with some awesome translucent purple plastic highlighted with darker maroon tones.
One thing though, and this is show accurate mind you, is the face peering over the edge in the front.
Kind of has that creepy “I’m watching you” vibe, but hey, as a I said it was show accurate.
The transformation is a fairly simple, save the @#%@ing legs that you have to fold just right…I will say, that I will probably not change him again after this review just because of those legs. Everything else is intuitive. From how you flip the arms from the back to the front of the jet becoming the shoulder pads.
Now one thing is the “collar” he peers from in jet mode, you can leave flat on his back like wings, but will have a very kibbleish look to them. You can also fold them back so he has a more defined body, but this will take up room on your shelf because they will protrude like a shark fin as shown in the comparison shots below.
In robot mode, Megatron is quite imposing. His clawed hands, a fantastically detailed face that just sneers contempt at any lesser toy (talking about YOU Prime!) in a brilliant silver. He could be more pose friendly, again no waist swivel, the arms do twist though so he can strike a defiant pose as he lowers his cannon down upon you for your last look…
The coloring is great on him, but what really shows off is the translucent plastic. In the proper lighting he is just awesome.
This just looks like the dark energon is flowing through him. I mean look at those eyes! Say what you will about the First Edition, THIS was done right with the deluxe!
Now accessory wise, I was quite happy. He has of course his fusion cannon that you unpeg from the jet mode and can place on either arm. Also he has a kind of brass knuckle, punch dagger, katar of doom.
The two can combine, but that puts additional weight on the weapon and stresses the ball joints. Will probably be having to break out the clear nail polish on the arms at some point. Now of course the fusion cannon is gimmicked. And it is totally useless because a) it can’t stay independently deployed and b) it turns the gun into a melee weapon and well he has the other weapon for that.
Again…LED…useless thing to drive cost up…FE does have a smaller cannon though. With firepower, size should count.
I LIKE this Megatron, much much more than Prime. He looks good on the shelf, show accurate, and the gimmick does not hinder the figure at all! Plus not too hard to track down. If you got Prime and need to wash that bad toy taste out of your mouth get him. You need a leader to swat your Starscream aside? Get him. Recommended indeed!
